This emergency electrical checklist gives Sydney homeowners, landlords and business operators clear first actions when electrical safety may be at risk. The priority is simple: protect people, avoid making the fault worse and arrange qualified help promptly.
Electrical emergencies can escalate quickly because the danger is not always visible. Damaged wiring may sit behind a wall, water can travel through ceiling spaces, and an overloaded circuit can heat up before any obvious flame appears. If you are unsure whether a situation is urgent, treat it as urgent until a licensed electrician has assessed it.
Emergency electrical checklist: make the area safe first
Before looking for a cause, take people away from the immediate area. Keep children, customers, staff and pets clear of damaged outlets, electrical equipment, fallen cables and any wet surfaces near power. Do not touch a person who may be in contact with live electricity. If it is safe to do so, turn off power at the main switchboard before approaching them, then call 000 for urgent medical assistance.
If you can safely reach the switchboard without crossing water, exposed wiring or a smoky area, turn off the affected circuit. If you cannot identify the circuit, switch off the main power. Leave the switchboard alone if it is wet, hot, making unusual noises or showing signs of damage. Do not remove covers, reset breakers repeatedly or try to dry electrical equipment with a towel or hair dryer.
Use this sequence when conditions allow:
- Move people away from the hazard and keep the area clear.
- Switch off the affected circuit or main power only if it is safe to do so.
- Call 000 where there is fire, electric shock, immediate danger or a fallen powerline.

When to call an emergency electrician
Some faults can wait for a scheduled appointment, such as a single non-essential power point that has stopped working without heat, odour or damage. Others require an urgent response. Call an emergency electrician when there is smoke, sparking, buzzing, scorching, a burning-plastic smell, exposed wiring, a damaged switchboard or a circuit that will not stay on.
Water and electricity are a high-risk combination. Electrical fire, smoke or burning smells
Call 000 immediately if you see flames, thick smoke or fire spreading. Do not use water on an electrical fire. If the fire is very small, you have the correct extinguisher and you can do so without risk, follow your workplace or household emergency plan. Otherwise, evacuate, close doors behind you if safe and wait for Fire and Rescue NSW.
Even after smoke clears, electrical components can remain damaged and unsafe. Keep the circuit isolated and have the system checked before power is restored. A scorched power point or melted plug is evidence of overheating, not a cosmetic defect.
Electric shock
An electric shock should always be taken seriously, even where the person says they feel fine. First, do not touch them until the electricity supply is disconnected or the source is safely removed. Call 000 if they are unconscious, have chest pain, breathing difficulty, burns, confusion or any ongoing symptoms.
Medical assessment is sensible after any significant shock because electrical injury can affect the body in ways that are not immediately obvious. The electrical source also needs professional inspection before it is used again.
Fallen powerlines and storm damage
Stay at least eight metres away from fallen powerlines, cables on fences, or anything that may be in contact with them. Keep others away and call 000. Do not touch trees, vehicles, puddles or metal objects near the line, and do not attempt to move branches yourself.
After a storm, check from a safe distance for damaged external fittings, loose solar panels, water ingress and visible cable damage. Avoid roofs and ceiling spaces. These areas can contain hidden water and compromised wiring, particularly after severe wind or rain.
What not to do during an electrical emergency
Quick fixes create many of the risks electricians encounter on emergency callouts. Do not wrap damaged cords in tape, use a double adaptor to keep essential equipment running or replace a fuse with an incorrect rating. Never bypass a safety switch or hold a tripping breaker in the on position.
