A light that flickers once when you switch on the kettle may seem like a minor annoyance. But when you are asking why lights flicker regularly, in several rooms, or alongside other electrical changes, it can point to a fault that needs prompt attention. The cause may be as simple as an incompatible LED globe, but it can also be a loose connection, overloaded circuit or supply issue.
The key is knowing what you can safely check and when to stop troubleshooting. Electrical faults can worsen over time, and loose connections in particular can generate heat behind a fitting, switch or switchboard.
Why lights flicker: the most common causes
The pattern of the flicker is often the best clue. A single light behaving differently from every other fitting usually has a local cause. Lights dimming or pulsing throughout the property need a broader assessment.
A loose or failing globe
A globe that is not seated correctly in its fitting can lose contact and flicker. This is common with bayonet-style globes and older fittings. LED globes can also begin to flicker as their internal driver fails, even when the globe still produces light.
With the power switched off at the light switch and the globe cool to touch, check whether it is secure. If it continues flickering after replacement with a quality, compatible globe, the fitting, wiring or control equipment may be at fault.
LED and dimmer incompatibility
LED lighting uses far less power than older halogen globes. That is good for energy use, but older dimmers were often designed for higher electrical loads.
