What Causes Electrical Burning Smells at Home?

A burning plastic, acrid or smoky smell near a power point, appliance or switchboard is not something to air out and forget. What causes electrical burning smells?

Electrical burning smells are usually created when a component gets hotter than it was designed to. The exact source is not always obvious, because electrical wiring runs through walls, ceilings, cabinets and under floors.

A smell may be localised to one outlet or appliance, or it may spread through a room as warm air moves. Either way, the smell alone cannot confirm the severity. A licensed electrician needs to isolate the circuit, inspect the affected components and test for the cause before the circuit is returned to service.

Loose wiring and poor connections

Loose terminals are one of the more common causes. When a wire is not firmly secured at a power point, light fitting, switch, junction box or switchboard, electricity meets resistance at that connection. Resistance creates heat. Over time, the terminal, insulation and surrounding fitting can discolour, deform or burn.

This can occur in older wiring, after a poorly completed repair, or where vibration and repeated use have affected a connection. Failing lights, transformers and ceiling fittings

Downlights, old transformers, exhaust fans and ceiling light fittings can create burning smells when components fail or when heat cannot dissipate properly. Flickering lights, a burning smell when lights are switched on, or a ceiling fitting that is unusually hot are all reasons to stop using that circuit.

LED fittings generally run cooler than older lighting, but they are not fault-proof. Incorrect drivers, incompatible dimmers and poor-quality fittings can still overheat. The difference is context. A minor dust smell should be brief, should not intensify, and should not come with smoke, hot plugs, discolouration, flickering, tripping or unusual noises. What to do when you smell burning from electrics
