What NSW law requires in a home

Homes built, or subject to substantial renovation, from 1 May 2006 generally require hardwired smoke alarms connected to the mains power supply and fitted with a backup battery. In new work, alarms may also need to be interconnected so that when one detects smoke, all alarms sound together. This is particularly valuable in multi-level homes and larger dwellings.
Existing homes that are not being substantially renovated may be able to use battery-powered alarms, provided the alarm complies with AS 3786 and is correctly installed. A sealed 10-year lithium battery alarm can be a practical replacement where hardwiring is not required, but it is not automatically an alternative when building work triggers hardwired requirements.

Where smoke alarms should be installed

Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, as the required clearance from walls, corners, fans, vents and other fittings can vary by product and ceiling type.
Avoid placing smoke alarms immediately next to cooking appliances, bathrooms, laundries, fireplaces or areas with high steam, dust or fumes unless the device is specifically designed and positioned for that environment. In some cases, a heat alarm in a kitchen area may be more appropriate than a smoke alarm. A heat alarm does not replace the smoke alarms required in sleeping and escape areas.
